This was actually made as a Christmas present last year, but it’s taken me a while to snap a picture and write it up. Several years ago, I made a self portrait in fabric for my sweetie for Christmas. He’s been requesting one of himself for several years now so that we have a set.
The portrait is fairly easy to make using a technique by quilt artist Maria Elkins. The fabric for this little quilt comes from 4 different hand-dyed blue muslin scraps that I had left from a fabric dyeing class. Using a black and white photo with 4 shades of gray as a guide, I cut corresponding areas out of the blue fabric so that when layered the portrait would emerge. The different gradations were fused in place, then machine quilted to emphasize the areas of the face and the hat.
