Favorite Mystery Writers

Susan Wittig Albert Susan Wittig Albert writes a series of novels featuring herbalist China Bayles who owns and operates an herb shop and tea room in a small Texas town.  Light and enjoyable reading.

Patricia Cornwell Patricia Cornwell writes a series of novels featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta.  These books tend to be very scientific and a little on the dark side.  

Diane Mott Davidson Diane Mott Davidson writes a series of novels that are part mystery, part cookbook.  They focus on Colorado caterer Goldy Schultz.  These books are light and entertaining.

Janet Evanovich Janet Evanovich writes both mysteries and romance novels.  Her humorous mystery series centers around Stephanie Plum of Trenton, New Jersey.  Stephanie is a bail bonds bounty hunter wannabe who succeeds at her job primarily through luck and the help of a hunky bounty hunter.  The series is thoroughly entertaining and funny.

Monica Ferris Monica Ferris writes a series of novels featuring Betsy Devonshire.  Betsy relocated to Excelsior, Minnesota where she runs a needlework shop that she inherited from her sister.  Each book contains a needlework project that relates to the featured needlework technique.  Entertaining even when the craft is not one that I know how to do.

Jasper Fforde Jasper Fforde writes a series featuring SpecOps agent Thursday Next.  These books are extremely intelligently written and feature lots of inside jokes for those who like to read, especially the classics.

Joanne Fluke Joanne Fluke writes a light mystery series featuring Hannah Swenson, proprietor of The Cookie Jar in Lake Eden, Minnesota.  Each book is full of mouth-watering cookie recipes that are featured in the book.  

Earlene Fowler Earlene Fowler writes a series which takes place in San Celina, California in ranching country and centers around Benni Harper.  Benni Harper is married to the chief of police and is always poking her nose into murder investigations when she's not busy running a museum and helping on her grandmother's ranch.  The book titles are named after quilt blocks, but the books do not have a lot to do with quilting.

Chloe Green Chloe Green writes mysteries featuring fashion stylist  Dallas O'Connor.  These books are smart, fun, quick reads.

Janis Harrison Janis Harrison writes a series of mysteries which center around florist Bretta Solomon in River City, Missouri.  These appeal to the gardener in me, although there's not much actual gardening going on.

Lauren Henderson Lauren Henderson writes a witty and entertaining series featuring artist Sam Jones.  These books are unique and highly entertaining.

Jacqueline Winspear Jacqueline Winspear is a relatively new mystery author who has written about investigator/psychologist Maisie Dobbs which are set in 1920s England.  Unique, smart and entertaining reading.

Jennifer Chiaverini Jennifer Chiaverini writes novels which center around Elm Creek Quilt Camp in Pennsylvania.  The books are about the lives and problems of residents and visitors to Elm Creek.

Jennifer Crusie Jennifer Crusie writes fun romance novels which are entertaining and humorous.

MaryJanice Davidson MaryJanice Davidson writes funny and entertaining "paranormal romances" about Betsy, a newbee vampire.  Betsy is a formerly 30 year old woman who loves clothes and shoes and also happens to be the reluctant Queen of the Vampires.

Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes together write books which are part romance, part mystery and always humorous and fun reading.

Diana Gabaldon Diana Gabladon writes historical fiction centered around a 20th century woman who weds a 18th century Scotsman.  Her visit to the 18th century is achieved through an accidental participation in a ritual at a stone circle.  All of the books contain lots of historical detail and each book is better than the last.

Jane Green Jane Green is one of the best in chic-lit and writes humorous and entertaining novels about the adventures and problems of young women.

Sophie Kinsella Sophie Kinsella's novels follow the adventures of financially-challenged Londoner, Becky Bloomwood.  These books are reminiscent of The Bridget Jones Diary.

Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine L'Engle is probably best known for her children's fiction, but she writes some very good books for adults as well.

Christopher Moore Christopher Moore writes highly unusual and thoroughly entertaining humorous fiction.  His books really defy description.

J.K. Rowling Who doesn't already know about J.K. Rowlings books about Harry Potter?  Although targeted at kids, they're a fun read for adults as well.

Jennifer Weiner Jennifer Weiner writes original and entertaining stories about women.  Her books are always a good read.
