Napping at Versailles
29" x 28 "

This is the final project that I made for an online class with Linda Schmidt via Quilt University. I started this particular project at the end of March 2007 and it took a pretty solid three weeks to complete. The idea was to take a photo and turn it into a quilt top. This was a really challenging project, but loads of fun!

I started with a a photo that I took of Rob snoozing on a bench at Versailles, France, on our honeymoon in 2003.  It was a great candidate for this process since it showed a profile which is easier to do than a full face.  I made a few artistic changes, but otherwise kept the fabric version true to the original photo.   The sky and Rob's clothing (except the hat and sunglasses) are all fabrics that I hand-painted. The shading on the railing, bench and Rob's skin were done with pastel chalks and colored pencils. The shadows were done with tulle and Misty Fuse. The closest trees are done by stitching little bits of green fabric together through a wash-away stabilizer. For the background trees, I was fortunate enough to find "cheater" fabric. The border fabric was a also a fortunate find as it looked like an ornate frame that would not be out of place at Versailles.
