Self Portrait
11" x 14"

A couple of Christmases ago, we decided it was time to stop purchasing presents and, both being creative types, make each other a gift instead. This year, I made a portrait of myself for my husband. I was inspired by portraits that were done on a Quilting Arts TV program by quilt artist Maria Elkins.

The fabric for this little quilt comes from 4 different hand-dyed orange muslin scraps that I had left from a fabric dyeing class. The gradations worked perfectly for this piece. The different gradations were fused in place, then machine quilted to emphasize the areas of the face. The finished quilt size is 8"x11". To make it easier to hang and to look more like a picture, I painted an 11"x14" prepared canvas with a contrasting color and highlighted it with colors from the variegated satin-stitch quilt edging.
