Portrait in Blue

Portrait in Blue

Completed December 2013

This was actually a Christmas present, but it’s taken me a while to snap a picture and write it up.  Several years ago, I made a self portrait in fabric for my sweetie for Christmas. He’s been requesting one of himself for several years now so that we have a set. I finally got around to it. The portrait is fairly easy to make using a technique quilt artist Maria Elkins.

The fabric for this little quilt comes from 4 different hand-dyed blue muslin scraps that I had left from a fabric dyeing class. Using a black and white photo with 4 shades of gray as a guide, I cut corresponding areas out of the blue fabric so that when layered the portrait would emerge.  The different gradations were fused in place, then machine quilted to emphasize the areas of the face and the hat.

  1. Hi Rebecca. I am awe struck and completely blown away by your artistry, talent and initiatives. You have a fantastic blog here and I love, love love it. I have been a quilter myself but gave it up due to time limitations (excuses, excuses!) ……now looking at your work here, I am inspired to pick up the needle again. Thanks n Love …Khush
